I have been practicing massage therapy (both full body and chair massage) since 1994. I decided to become a massage therapist after receiving my first massage. I guess you could say I just knew. Over the years I have had the opportunity to give therapeutic massage sessions to people from all walks of life and throughout the years I have “discovered” a few things that may be helpful for those considering massage therapy…
Don’t wait. Probably the most common feedback that I hear from clients is that they don’t know why they waited so long to come in for a massage. So schedule an appointment today. You’ll be glad you did!
Massage is healing. I am grateful that I continually get to see the benefits of massage therapy on my clients as they move through the discomforts of pregnancy, the cycle of chronic pain, the physical demands of being a athlete, the stresses of a busy modern life, and a myriad other ills, pains, bumps, and bruises (both emotional and physical). It’s definitely great to receive massage therapy solely for relaxation… but it’s good to remember that it can help with so much more.
Sometimes the best time to get a massage is when you are extremely busy. It may seem counterintuive but taking a break for 1 hour or 90 minutes to recieve a massage when you’re super busy can give you just the break you need to get you through those “crazy” times in life.
Working with one massage therapist over time can be benificial. You can go to a spa and receive a session from a different therapist every time, but when you work with one therapist he or she will get to know your body and become your personal massage expert – ready to help you with whatever challenges come your way.
Speak your mind. One of the major complaints I hear from new clients who’ve had a bad massage experience is that they didn’t get the type of massage they requested. Maybe they wanted a deep-tissue massage but got a light relaxation massage instead. I’m often surprised to find out that they didn’t tell the massage therapist what type of massage they wanted. Since it’s your massage and your time and your hard earned money that you’re spending I think one of the most important parts of my job is to be a good listener. That way I can tailor the session to your needs. No cookie-cutter massages here. Instead I’ll use my education, my intuition, and my experience to try to create a massage session that’s just right for you.
